    The Great Wave of Kanagawa (1830/1831) better known as “The Wave” is part of the series of thirty-six views of Mount Fuji. The Master's signature is, for experts, included in the insert located at the top left. This engraving on cherry wood (chosen for its hardness) measures 26 cm in height and 38 cm in width.     Katsushika Hokusai

    During his nearly ninety-year life, Hokusai used about thirty names, including Gakyojin, which can be translated as “paint freak”. Hokusai became famous for his "36 Views of Mount Fuji" series of images. From there comes his most famous image, "The great wave off Kanagawa".

    The Japanese counted Hokusai's works more as "applied art", while in Europe his work won over to Japonism, inspired artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt and retained the new art.
